Citizen Kane (1941) and what you want to be when you grow up

Citizen Kane is considered by many film critics the best movie that’s ever been made. Although it had only won one Oscar (for Best Original Screenplay), it took the first place in AFI’s 100 Years, 100 Movies, both in 1998 and in 2007 and topped most of the movie industry tops done after its release in 1941.

The film presents the life and legacy of Charles Foster Kane (Orson Welles), a character that’s partly based on the real life media magnate William Randolph Hearst (what was interesting at the time was that Hearst prohibited its newspapers to mention anything about the movie). The storyline focuses on a reporter’s search to find out what Kane’s dying word – “Rosebud” – meant.

His Girl Friday (1940)

Hollywood has always been fascinated by the lives of those people who basically know all its secrets: journalists.

Movies like Citizen Kane, All the President’s Men, A True Crime, Wag the Dog, Zodiac, Almost Famous are only a few examples that bring the power of media to the big screen, showing its complexity and diversity.

Because tonight I’m in a comedy mood, I’ll leave here a classic recommendation, very dear to me, with a time-traveling story: a newspaper editor does everything he can to keep his ex-reporter wife from remarrying.

The movie: His Girl Friday (1940), directed by Howard Hawkes, starring Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell. Cute, old-fashioned comedy for a really lazy night.

„To me, that’s love.”

Paul Newman și Joanne Woodward au fost unul dintre cuplurile de poveste de la Hollywood. Fotografiile lor de familie sunt deosebite, cei doi arătând lumii viața lor în cele mai frumoase cadre.

Joanne Woodward: “Paul and I were good friends before we were lovers. We really liked each other. We could talk to each other, we could tell each other anything without fear of ridicule or rejection. There was trust.”
